Wells Family

Luisa and I recently returned home from photographing a wedding in Aruba, and while travel is nice, and Aruba was MORE than wonderful, it is so great to come home. I love where I live, and I love the fall. The leaves for the past few weeks have been a gorgeous blend of colors. Right before leaving for Aruba, I had the chance to photograph this awesome family at Kathryn Albertson Park in Boise. Luisa and I have become really great friends with the Wells, and I can say that they are one amazing family.

These are great, Nate! My favorites: First one on the bridge [great lines!]; kids running in front of parents [pure delight!]; and the black and white of the husband and wife [still very much in love!]. The rest are nice too, but those are some of my favorites. Beautiful family! Amazing photographer!

Beautiful work Nate! The colors are stunning. Here in MN, we are way past our peak of fall colors - we're in the middle of 60+ mph winds and three days of straight rain.

I know you have said you often shoot wide open at 1.4 on your 50. With these family shots, are you stopping up or still at 1.4. Everyone seems in focus so I'm guessing you stop up some.

Very awesome work!

Awesome questions Laura. You actually got me curios, so I went back to check the Metadata of each photo and I'll include it here. I'll treat each group of photos as one, whether it's one up, two up or four up. I shot A LOT of this session with my 70-200 which I ALWAYS leave wide open no matter what, since it's a 2.8, and I'm usually using it at 200mm.

Picture 1: 70-200 @ 2.8
Picture 2: 50mm @ 1.6
Picture 3: 50mm @ 2.2
Picture 4: 50mm @ 2.2
Picture 5&6 (All four images): 70-200 @ 2.8
Picture 7,8,9 (the 3 horizontal of kids): 50mm @ 1.6
Picture 10A: 50mm @ 1.4
Picture 10B: 70-200 @ 2.8
Picture 11 (kids running b&w): 70-200 @ 2.8
Picture 12: All 4 at 50mm @ 1.6
Picture 13A: 50mm @ 1.4
Picture 13B: 70-200 @ 2.8
Picture 14: All 4 at 50mm @ 1.4
Picture 15: 50mm @ 1.4
Picture 16: 70-200 @ 2.8

K! So I do stop up a bit on some. Here's my rule of thumb(s). It all depends on distance, and how many layers of people you have. I generally try to position everyone on the same plane of focus, but if I don't or can't, I stop up (see picture 3 and 4...there were multiple "layers", so I shot at 2.2). Also, if I'm at least 15 feet from my subject, I know I can almost always shoot at 1.4, unless there's a HUGE difference between the front and back person. Make sense? I hope so. Sorry for the long winded reply. I'm probably going to do a blog post soon on the difference of shooting at 50 vs 200.

Hi Nate!

Thanks for the rundown of all the metadata - you got me thinking. I too have the 70-200 but to date have only used it at weddings. From the looks of your photos, I think next summer I'm going to give her a little more attention as a portrait lens too.

I know you've mentioned you and Luisa have two cameras. Do you shoot with the 50 on one and the 70-200mm on the your D3[s?] or do you swap lenses as needed? By using the 50 on a crop sensor, the distance between you and the subjects increases, which would make using 1.4 or 1.6 easier with groups. Interesting!

This family has a great sense of style! I really love it.
